Student Athletics and their GPA

by Mr. Lutt

October 06, 2001

In the October 2005 Iowa High Schools Athletic Association (IHSAA) Bulletin Scott Kibby wrote an article entitled "Getting Your Students Connected." Scott is the AD for Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. They are a large enough school to keep tract of the relationship between students who are in activities and their Grade Point Average (GPA). A summery of his data is below.

                                                                            2000-2004 Average

GPA for Students who are in no activities:                        2.29

GPA for Students who are in 1 or more activities:             3.08

GPA for Students who are in 2 or more activities:             3.30

GPA for Students who are in 3 or more activities:             3.41

Students at Farragut who are in more activities also have higher GPAs. So the congratulate the students for not just what they do on the field, in marching band, during speech, and etc, but also what they do in the classroom.
