Campout Reading Program

by Mr. Lutt

September 25, 2006

The kick-off for “Campout Reading” was September 25, 2006.  The event began at 2:00 and end at 3:30 p.m.  Students and teachers dressed in “camping clothes” like jeans, shorts, t-shirts, fishing hats, etc.  Students were mixed with other grades, so each group had students in K-6.

The camping activities featured 7 stations which include:  storytelling around the campfire, pancake races, choral readings, campfire songs, and choosing a book to keep from the “campfire” of books.  For the last activity students decorated their own bag and then making their own trail mix.

Mrs. Brendensteiner announced at the end of the kick-off events her BIG CHALLENGE--Mrs. Bredensteiner will spend a day in a tent.  She has challenged students to read 120,000 minutes.  If the goal is reached, she will spend all day outside in a tent and students may visit for planned reading activities. There will be a goal chart in the Concourse so that all students may see how the goal is being reached.

In order to reach this goal, each student would have to read approximately 40 minutes a week.  We suggest four days a week, so that the habit of reading every day will be reinforced.  Teachers will announce “Campout Reading” and time the minutes that students are reading, like SSR.  Timing begins only when all students are ready to read.
