Marvin Walter ('53) IHSAA Hall of Fame Football Player
#1 Six Man Team of the Year in Iowa
October 17, 2006
Marvin Walter, '53, joined an elite group of men this year as an Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame Football Player. Induction will be Friday, November 17 at the halftime of the Class 4A Championship in the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. Walter is the first inductee from Iowa's six and eight man player era. He later started three years for Iowa State where he was a team caption. Congratulations Mr. Walter!
The following is information from Bud Legg ( blegg@iahsaa.org ) who is in charge of the Hall of Fame for IAHSAA:
Marvin Walter, Farragut (1953) is a 2006 Inductee for the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IAHSAA) Football Players’ Hall-of-Fame sometime in November 2006.
Marvin Walter is the first IAHSAA Hall of
Fame inductee to have played six-man football for legendary and
hall of fame coach Dale Hackett and the first honoree from
Farragut. He started at end for the Admirals as a freshman but had
a season ending injury in the second game his sophomore year.
Undaunted, he was an outstanding running back the next two seasons
when the team went 17-1, including an unbeaten, untied 9-0 campaign
in 1952. The Des Moines Register rated them the top six man
team in the state (from approximately 138 teams). He scored
63 touchdowns in those 18 games and rushed for nearly 2,700 yards,
averaging over 11 yards per carry. He was a first team All-State
selection each year. From Farragut, he went to Iowa State,
where he played freshman football and three seasons as the starting
fullback for the Cyclones. His senior year, he was captain
and Iowa State used the single wing where he was the blocking back
for future NCAA All American Dwight Nichols.
