Beware Scholarship Scams!

by Colleen Slavik

November 01, 2006

Heads up-- This week a counselor had a sophomore student inquire about a scholarship meeting her family attended over the weekend.  The organization charged the family $995 with a cancellation period of five days.  The family could not pay the fee up front, so used a credit card with 18% interest.  The student reported that many families were signing up for this service -- possibly some of your students!  The counselor encouraged the student to cancel their contract and get their money back before it was too late.  To make matters worse, the company is not answering their phone.

Do not let this happen to your family or any other family.  If you have attended such a meeting and cannot reach  the company, call the credit card company and cancel all charges to the organization.  No one should have to pay for scholarship information.  Your school counselor can help you find many scholarships and there are many free sites and companies who can help as well.    These organizations are running a scam as most if not all the information is free if you know where to go.  Use the $1000 for college and ask  your school counselor or College Planning Center to help you.    You can reach them by going to their site http://www.collegeplanning.org/ or by calling 1-877-272-4692.  Again, this is free!
