ISU Extension Day
DNA & Fingerprinting
April 24, 2007
David Seilstad, ISU Extension 4-H youth specialist, presented a six-hour program consisting of laboratory experiments and protocols equivalent to introductory college-level chemistry labs to the Farragut seventh-grade children. Students learned the importance of science and biotechnology as they related it to food and fiber from agriculture. The laboratory equipment consisted of warming plates, pipettes, beakers and test tubes, where students extracted
DNA from a fruit or vegetable. Then students solve a mystery of a mock crime scene just like on television. The students enjoyed the program!
