Read in the Wildest Places
The theme of this year's reading program is designed to encourage students to read every day.
The goal is to read for 120,000 minutes. Student minutes will be shown on a bulletin board in the landing on the main floor of the Elementary Building.
The finished bulletin board will reflect all 120,000 minutes.
Each time a number of minutes is reached, a part of the bulletin board will be finished.
- The nine bars of the Cage are worth 5,000 minutes.
- Each of the eight animals is worth 8,000 minutes.
- Then to get Mrs. Bredensteiner inside the cage takes another 11,000 minutes.
When the bulletin board is done and all 120,000 minutes have been accomplished, Mrs. Bredensteiner will spend the day in a real cage.
Each quarter of this school year will be celebrated with an activity.
1st quarter: Students gathered in the Concourse to enjoy a choral reading "Giraffes Can't Dance" performed by the teachers.
Then students drew an animal and made a paper plate mask. Afterwards, each student enjoyed a sack of animal snacks and jungle juice.

2nd quarter: Plans are being made for a live animal show.
3rd quarter: Students will perform in the "Jungle Show". Each class or group of students will be singing, doing choral readings, reciting poetry, or performing a skit. Many kinds of activities are expected.
4th quarter: Students will spend the day at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo.
Students will also enjoy spending some time in the cage with Mrs. Bredensteiner while she reads a story--- if the goal is met.
The animals in our reading zoo are: a monkey, a panda bear, a giraffe, a lion, an elephant, a zebra, an alligator, and a toucan.
